XENON or High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps do not have a filament like normal headlamp bulbs. Instead the light is created by an electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight quartz capsule filled with xenon gas, mercury and metal halides.
The light produced is a blue-white light that is more effective for night time driving because it is closer to natural daylight.
The light output ( Lumens) from a 35w XENON HID lamp is approximately 80% more than a 55w halogen bulb which equates to a 300% increase in usable brightness. The XENON HID system also draws less current through the headlamp switchgear thus increasing the life of the light switch itself and associated electrics.
